Important: Are you on Facebook? Like my page (opens in new window) for the latest beat selling tips.

It’s been a while since I was on a hangout with the brother Blitz Beats, and this was definitely a great hangout.

He not only reveals his ‘secret’ to having $10,000 months, but he tells you how you can  generate that type of money and more.

I can guarantee that you won’t find any of the other TOP beat sellers online revealing their secrets without a price, and that’s what separates Blitz from the rest of them.

Make sure you get your pen and paper ready because there will be plenty of jewels dropped in this one.

How Do Music Producers Get Paid In The Music Industry Today?

Urgent: Are you on Facebook? Like my page (opens in new window) for the latest info on the music business.

Every music producer, signed or unsigned, should understand music royalties. Unfortunately, most don’t.

This is why you hear a music producer all over the radio (i.e DJ Mustard) and they’re not getting paid for their work.

So in this video I’m going to break down how we as music producers get paid, and why you must study this type of information.

I encourage you to watch the video below over a few times because it’s vital information if you want to survive in this game.

How Music Producers Get Paid Royalties

Like I said in the video I encourage you to watch this over, because this game is shady, and you either know how to play it, or you get raped tryna make it big. (LITERALLY in some cases)

Peace

When it comes time to release your music, most find it difficult to decide on what they should put out first. Should I release a single? Or would a mixtape be more effective?

While different artists prefer different methods, the following 3 part strategy is what I feel works for newer musicians. Even if you’ve released material before, this strategy can still work for you. So check it out and share it with other musicians who may find it valuable.

Before You Release a Single, Mixtape, or Album

Before you think about releasing anything, you first need to set your foundation. Ask yourself, “why am I dropping this?” “How will this benefit my career?”

Here’s two reasons you’ll want to release something:

  1. A way to promote  and raise awareness about you, and your music
  2. To have something to exchange with fans; money, or contact details being the two main things you want to collect from them

Putting out a single by itself may get some people to notice you (as long as you promote it of course), but if you don’t take advantage of that buzz, you’ll be back to square when it comes to your next release. (Unless you have a few singles lined up)

Is there a better way to do things? It sure is. You want to make sure that you lead as many people as possible that liked your first single to your website and get on your mailing list. Getting them to sign up is a secondary goal, but it’s definitely an important one. This way you can send content directly to your fans as opposed to just posting them on your social sites and hope they see it. (If you need help setting up your mailing list inbox me on Facebook and I’ll be glad to help you out)

With all that in mind, lets take a look at the order you should release your material.

1. Have a Short EP Ready as Something to Exchange

As you want people to hear your first single to end up on your mailing list (newsletter), you have to have a valuable incentive to entice them to join. Even though some of your fans will join just because you asked them to, many won’t. This is a huge missed opportunity that most artists fall victim to, as they think that people will just find their music online, which is a big misconception.

Now when it comes to incentives, giving people access to your new music that is not yet available to the public can be a big bargaining chip. You can offer them a 2-3 track EP in exchange for their email address. (Which is what you really want besides money) Offer this on your website (hopefully you have one), and have your autoresponder email them your songs as soon as they’ve confirmed their email to join.

So, now that you’ve got your incentive which will entice more people to sign up, now it’s time for your first single.

2. Release a Single For Contact Details

Now me personally, I think you should release a single first. If you pay attention to the way the music industry is running these days, singles are what is driving the industry (especially in Hip-hop). Since albums are not selling like they used to, it would be wise to capitalize on a single before thinking about putting together an album. (Again this is just my opinion). The IMA Music Business Academy has a single release plan for you if you want more info on how to release a single.

  1. Singles are quicker to release. You don;t have to wait months to write and record new songs.
  2. Singles are cheaper to produce than albums. If you play it right, you can use your single to fund the completion of your album.
  3. You can adjust your approach as you get feedback on your first single. If you record a whole album nobody wants to hear, you’ve just wasted a lot of time and money. (Remember Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come album?)

There’s a few more, but these are most important in my opinion.

The main purpose of the single is to gain some traction, and then send those fans to your website where they can sign up for your EP.

Keep promoting your single, to attract more and more fans to your website. Remember, the more people you’ll be able to join your list, the more people you’ll be able to sell your music to in the future.

Tip: Make sure you promote your single with an option for people to pay. You want to give them the opportunity to give you money, and you will be surprised how many people is willing to give you money for something they like.

3. Release a Longer EP, or Dare I Say an Album

Once you got an EP under your belt, and released your first single, you should look into releasing another single. After you’ve released a few singles, you should look into dropping an album. That is if you’ve built enough of a buzz from your previous works.

The good thing is, by this time you should have a few songs that your fans like more than the rest. You can add those onto your album as Bonus Tracks. This will add more value to your project without you having to do any extra work.

Conclusion

While every musician should have a mixtape or EP after they’ve been making music for a while, right now it makes more sense for newer artists to focus on singles. Build up your fan base, and mailing list, and email them anytime you have something new out. This will get you a wave of people either listening, or buying your music.

What do you think about this plan? Let me know in the comments.
